CARL THOMSEN’S STORY

Primary Influences: Theater and Meditation

About Us — Sacred Dwelling Builders

More Than a Contractor. A Builder of Sacred Space.

At Sacred Dwelling Builders, we believe your home is not just a structure — it’s a living expression of who you are, and who you are becoming.

Carl Thomsen: Craftsman, Healer, Builder of Sacred Space

Carl's picture

Carl Thomsen has spent a lifetime learning — in ways both visible and invisible — what it means to transform a living space.

His path to home renovation is not a conventional one. For more than 35 years, Carl worked as a teacher, dancer, director, and choreographer in theater. It was there that he developed something most contractors never acquire: a deep fluency in human emotion, interpersonal dynamics, and the invisible forces that shape how people experience the spaces they inhabit. Theater taught Carl that atmosphere is not accidental. It is created — through intention, craft, and sensitivity to what is felt but not always seen.

During quieter periods in his theater career, Carl began renovating houses to supplement his income. What started as practical work gradually revealed itself as something more — another stage, in its own way, on which human lives were being lived, and transformed.

Twenty-five years ago, he made the transition to full-time renovation work and has run his own companies ever since. The integrity, honesty, and attention to human detail he cultivated in theater have never left him. They show up every day on every job site.

The Meditation and Spiritual Foundation

A Foundation Built Over Fifty Years

Carl has been a devoted meditator since the age of nineteen — more than fifty years of daily practice. This is not incidental to his work. It is foundational to it.

The clarity, grounded-ness, and focused presence that meditation cultivates have proven to be among the most practical tools in his renovation work. Construction sites are inherently dynamic, sometimes chaotic environments. The ability to remain calm, centered, and clear-headed under pressure — to hold the vision of the finished space while navigating the inevitable complications of the process — is something Carl attributes directly to his lifelong practice.

But meditation gave him something beyond practical steadiness. It opened his perception to dimensions of space and energy that most contractors never consider.

Over decades of working in homes, Carl came to understand what many ancient traditions have always known: spaces are not neutral. They hold the energetic imprint of everything that has happened within them. The emotions, the conflicts, the grief, the joy, the long years of a life lived — all of it leaves a trace. And that trace affects how a home feels to the people who inhabit it, often profoundly.

This understanding changed everything about how Carl approaches his work.

The Integration of Physical and Energetic

Working on Two Levels Simultaneously

When Carl works with a client on a renovation project, he is always working on two levels at once.

The first is the physical — the structure, the systems, the materials, the craftsmanship. The visible transformation of a space through skilled, experienced hands. This is the work any good contractor does.

The second is subtler. Carl brings to every project an awareness of the energetic life of a home — its vibrational history, its current condition, the way its layout and configuration either support or obstruct the flow of life within it. He listens not just to what clients say they want, but to what the home itself seems to be asking for.

This dual awareness is why clients so frequently describe working with Carl as feeling different from other contractors. He sees the project — and the people — wholistically.

In addition to his renovation work, Carl offers home energy healing as a dedicated service. Drawing on decades of meditation practice, his study of energy systems, and his work as a spiritual channel, he is able to identify where stagnant or discordant energy has accumulated in a home and support its release and renewal. This service is available as a complement to renovation work, or as a standalone offering for clients who sense their space needs this kind of attention — regardless of whether any physical work is planned.

A Life Lived in Alignment

Carl is married to Barbara Schofield Thomsen. Together they teach Qigong — an ancient Chinese practice of cultivating and moving life-force energy through the body — to students in their community. The also practice and teach meditation together. They also take every opportunity to dance together, both socially and improvisationally. Their shared practices deepen Carl’s daily relationship with energy as a living, workable force: something that responds to intention, movement, and attention.

They live in Catskill, New York, in the heart of the Hudson Valley, and travel to visit their many grandchildren scattered around the world.

The name Sacred Dwelling Builders was chosen deliberately. For Carl, it is not a brand — it is a statement of purpose. Every home is sacred. Every dwelling holds within its walls the possibility of becoming a true sanctuary: a place of serenity, rejuvenation, creativity, and inspired living.

That is what Carl builds. Not just renovated kitchens and improved living rooms, but spaces in which life feels more possible.

“A home is not just where you live. It is the physical expression of your inner world — and it has the potential to support, inspire, and uplift every area of your life. I have spent my career learning how to work with homes on every level they exist. I bring all of that to every project I take on.”

— Carl Thomsen, Sacred Dwelling Builders

Carl has learned through the many years of home repair and renovation that the mental, emotional, and spiritual components of construction are just as important as the nails, boards, and sheetrock. So, now, when he works with clients on a project, he works on two levels: the physical conditions of the job (what needs to be repaired or renovated), and the subtle, vibrational conditions (what are the clients’ needs, desires and wishes for the project).

After many professional incarnations, Carl is proud to call his company Sacred Dwelling Builders because the name articulates his personal approach and appreciation for the importance of house and home in people’s lives. His clients invariably have a deep feeling for their home as a sanctuary; a place to find serenity and rejuvenation. As well as a place to foster creativity and provide a launching pad for new ideas and directions.
